| Preface to the Persian Translation of End of Dissatisfaction Doubling Down on Private Enjoyment Since the original publication of The End of Dissatisfaction in English in 2004, the proliferation of the command to enjoy has not abated. The call for a return to prohibition that was still heard at the time has not won out over the imperative to enjoy. To the contrary, inducements to enjoyment have become much more widespread than they were at the time, even though they then seemed almost ubiquitous. The last decade and a half have opened up new arenas for enjoyment along with additional sites that command it. In other words, the situation has gotten much worse, not better. Given this predicament, while I would like to say that I’m happy that a Persian translation of this book is now appearing, it is an event to rue rather than celebrate since it portends that the rule of the command to enjoy continues to extend itself further and further. This command is not just a hindrance to our political emancipation. It now threatens the continued existence of human society on the planet. Todd McGowan University of Vermont |
